Remember Forever:
September 11, 2001…and beyond.

You couldn't get to Ground Zero, but you watched news reports of those who did: Our Firefighters … men and women who make a career of risking their lives to save the lives of others. The dedication displayed by 343 of those who died on that fateful morning is equaled only by that of the survivors in their ranks - those who pressed forward with search and rescue at Ground Zero, and those who safeguard our families and communities every day.

With the spirit of these heroic firefighters in mind, and all those before them, PennWell Corporation, parent company of the oldest publication serving the fire service, Fire Engineering, and the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC), has established the Fire Engineering Courage and Valor Foundation. The Foundation was created to ensure that we as Americans "Remember Forever" the fallen firefighters of September 11, and in their memory, recognize other firefighters who demonstrate that same courage and valor. The goal of this independent, tax-free Foundation is to raise $1,000,000 to fund the Foundation's annual Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award in perpetuity. PennWell contributed an initial endowment of $25,000 and will match contributor donations at a rate of one dollar for every nine dollars contributed, up to $100,000. The income from the Foundation will be awarded annually to a firefighter, either posthumously or to a surviving hero, for exemplary courage and valor in a rescue operation during the preceding year.

The Fire Engineering
Courage and Valor
Foundation honors
a courageous
firefighter
every year.
On April 13, 2002 the widow and family of Deputy Chief Ray Downey accepted the first Courage and Valor medal and cash award at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis. The Foundation awarded $25,000 to the Downey family and in addition to PennWell's commitment of $100,000 to the Foundation, the company provided an additional $25,000 gift to the Downey family in recognition of the many contributions of Ray Downey to the Fire Engineering magazine and FDIC Conference.

An independent committee with representatives from throughout the fire service will select each year's honoree.
